Inspired by an ancient Viking sword, sometimes referred to as the ‘Fullerö Sword’ by bladesmiths, the new watch is endowed with a dial formed of hand forged Damascus steel. Both the bezel and caseback are enlivened with the GoS braided motif, while polished and satinfinished surfaces are juxtaposed, delivering nuanced contrast. A Swiss automatic movement, the La Joux-Perret G101, personalised to GoS’s exacting requirements, sits at the heart of the Fullerö Sword, a watch that exudes much Scandinavian charm.
Since its inception, GoS Watches has always celebrated Scandinavian history and culture. For its latest creation, the company looked to Fullerö, a village 10 km north of Uppsala, Sweden. Amidst the vast verdant landscape, the soil is rich in ancient remains and the area has been synonymous with ironmaking since the Bronze Age. Indeed, some of the earliest examples of European iron can be traced to this region.
In 1969, Professor Greta Arwidson was overseeing an excavation in Fullerö when an ancient Viking sword was discovered. Once released from the Earth’s embrace, this rare artefact proved remarkably well preserved. The sword’s surface was adorned with an intricate pattern-welded core that amazingly was still intact, testament to the fine craftsmanship employed at the time of its creation. This priceless artefact led Patrik Sjögren, a master watchmaker and CEO of GoS Watches, to develop the ‘Fullerö Sword’.
Swedish master bladesmith, Conny Persson has skilfully created a hand forged Damascus steel dial, emulating the Viking sword’s pattern-welded core. Back in the day, the makers of these swords combined two different types of steel. Initially, rods of forged steel, comprising 7 – 9 layers formed of the two types of steel, were twisted around their axis. Thereafter, two or three of these rods were forged together, with the harder steel used for the edges of the blade.
Conny has made the dial of the Fullerö Sword using the same technique, albeit using modern steel and adding a thin layer of nickel in between each layer to enhance the dial’s appearance. Initially, the Swedish master bladesmith sought to forge 4 rods together, repeating the arrangement used for the historic sword; however, with experimentation both Patrik and Conny chose to go further. They agreed that by creating 17 layers in every rod they could produce a pattern better suited to the proportions of a watch dial, culminating in a richly textured dial surface. The Fullerö Sword is offered in three dial options: ‘glowing steel’, ‘midnight blue’ or ‘raw steel’.
GoS spear-shape hour and minute hands, together with a fine centre seconds hand, indicate the prevailing time. Breaking with convention, the dial shuns standard appliques. Instead, it is fringed with a sapphire ring, punctuated with 12 spaces denoting each hour with minute markers in between. Beyond the sapphire ring lies a white luminescent circlet, partially set within the interior of the case. During the day the sapphire ring is clear, refracting light and creating a bewitching lustre. When the sun falls, the luminescent circlet behind the sapphire
ring emits a rich orange glow, replicating the appearance of intensely hot steel when being forged. This distinctive orange emission, created exclusively for GoS Watches, is achieved using 3D Lumicast®️ Technology.
The Fullerö Sword is housed in a 41.5 mm stainless steel case. Inspired by Viking bracelets, the exterior has been expertly finished, the product of Patrik’s skilled hands. The bezel is adorned with the GoS braided motif, inspired by a four-line braiding pattern gracing numerous Viking runestones. To enhance the appearance of the bezel, the GoS braided motif is inlaid with enamel, accentuating contrast. The sides of the case incorporate grooves, wonderfully adding texture to the composition.
