Redwood Inlaid with Copper Gilt Figurines and Water Duck Mechanism Pavilion Clock

(Modern replica of the classic Emperor style from the Qianlong period, a candidate for cultural heritage status)

  • Height 72 cm, Width 33.5 cm, Thickness 22 cm

The entire piece is made of redwood, inlaid with copper gilt vine carvings, and is divided into two levels. The upper section features a hexagonal pavilion-style clock top, adorned with a golden cup. The pavilion is enclosed with six panes of glass and includes a lift door and a figurine mechanism. The lower section consists of an arched clock body, which houses a water mechanism and a moving duck mechanism at the top.

The clock face is round and white with three hands, and the corners are decorated with copper gilt reliefs. This clock chimes every quarter hour, on the hour, and marks the minutes. As the chimes sound, the water mechanism and running ducks are activated above the clock face; a small door on the right side of the pavilion top rises, allowing a pair of figurines to move in and out, followed by entering through the left door that subsequently opens. When the music ends, the small door in the pavilion closes.

For interactive use, there is a pull cord on the right side of the base, allowing one to listen to the chimes, check the time, and enjoy the water mechanism, running ducks, and figurine movements. This work references the classic wide clock style from the mid to late Qianlong period, with a slight adjustment in materials: the original copper gilt has been replaced with redwood. This change enhances the visual contrast and depth, making the lines and patterns more aesthetically pleasing.
