Galloping Horse: Cloisonné by Xiong Songtao

The Hua Collection is dedicated to traditional Chinese craft, made in collaboration with recognized masters. For Galloping Horse, that master is Xiong Songtao, third-generation heir to the Xiong family enamel workshop, a nationally recognized China Arts and Crafts Master, and a representative inheritor of Jingtailan cloisonné, a craft listed as intangible cultural heritage.

Xiong has been making cloisonné watch dials since around 2006 and is known for wire as fine as 0.04mm. Here, gold wire traces the head and flowing mane of a horse, following a design painted by Atelier Mephalie. Enamel in amber and chestnut tones is then laid into the cells inlayers and fired repeatedly, building the depth of color that sets the horse against a black ground.

A slender hand-polished handset keeps the time display legible without obscuring Xiong's enamel work.The hands are polished by hand and kept slim, leaving the dial to the enamel. No two dials come out of the kiln exactly alike. The horse is the standard design, and collectors can commission other motifs at additional cost. Galloping Horse is cased in stainless steel, 42mm across and 12mm thick, and limited to 99 pieces.
