Building off the bold and seamless original worldtimer, the Midnight has an adjustable and rotating metal dial that carries the 24-hour indication to be read against static cities carried on two levels of a sapphire dial. We’ve chosen a representative selection of our favourite hotspots of intrigue from New York to Rio and old London town (with Pago Pago thrown in for good measure). The effect is one of subtle layering and texture, offset against contrasting indices on the upper sapphire dial and sapphire hands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is of course plenty of luminous material in play – in fact every marking on the sapphire components and hands are ceramic Super-LumiNova X1, for an extended glow. The orange numbers also glow, but in orange. There is simply no reason for missing your nocturnal rendezvous.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA deep sapphire box on the front serves as both crystal and bezel; it is bonded seamlessly to the DLC coated grade 5 titanium case body. This case body carries the upper portion of the openworked flying blade lugs which also feature an interlocking groove that keys into the caseback, which also appears seamless from the underside. A polished top and bottom finish to the lugs contrasts with the matte texture of the case sides, with dynamic sculpting continuously blending lug surfaces with case body. Though it is one of our larger cases at 40mm, with the visual presence to match, the shorter lugs allow for wearability across a wide variety of wrist sizes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSchwarz-Etienne’s microrotor automatic has been given a thorough overhaul and is visually distinctive thanks to the all-bespoke bridge design by Ming Thein. It is even more open, airy and transparent, with unique features to bring it in line with our latest design language. The barrel is fully skeletonized and more open than before for easier determination of state of wind; plates and bridges are 5N rose gold coated for a little romance under that otherwise serious exterior; the rotor guard is a whimsical four-level ‘staircase’ with anglage, and the tungsten microrotor itself is a little larger with a new organic shape inspired by donuts for higher winding efficiency. The microrotor also has a new mounting and ceramic ball bearings for increased winding efficiency.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 29.01 Midnight is finished off with our exceedingly comfortable FKM rubber strap on a matching DLC coated buckle. Those particular challenges were met with the LW.01 (probably the lightest mechanical wristwatch ever at 8.8 grams) and 37.09 Bluefin (good to 600m plus 50% safety factor). However, thanks to the choice of material, pressure balanced domed crystals and optimized internal engineering, the 37.02 Ghost weighs just 35 grams, and blew through our water resistance target by 2.6 times.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Ghost started with the idea of ethereal light playing off a forest of architecturally finished (i.e. not polished) metallic surfaces – claddings, buttresses, pillars, struts, baffles. What if we could somehow translate that into wrist presence? Given how many of our design inspirations are architectural it would be remiss of us not to try.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eModern watchmaking primarily uses grade 5 titanium; which is an alloy with aluminium and vanadium. It was originally developed for aerospace applications and for easy machining, milling and cold working. In fact, it is only marginally harder to machine than the common aluminium alloys which allowed for much wider adoption of the material and advancements in various industries. It also happens to be ‘whiter’ and ‘brighter’ in appearance – pure titanium has a warmth that’s missing from the grade 5 alloy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePure titanium – known as grade 2 (confusing, we know) – is difficult to machine as it’s highly ductile and has a low elastic modulus, meaning the material can deflect instead of cutting, but at the same time, it tends to also work harden through heat cycling and impact making it change character during machining and become increasingly harder to cut. As a bonus, grade 2 titanium shavings and dust are also highly flammable – even though the bulk material is incredibly inert. Prior to commercial availability of grade 5, titanium watches were all grade 2, rare, and expensive due to all the aforementioned challenges.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe, however, like to make our lives harder than necessary and so decided to make as much of our watch out of grade 2 titanium as possible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis means that the entirety of the case, and even the dial and buckle are made of grade 2 titanium. As a material that cannot be polished, it allowed Ming Thein to translate the architectural inspiration and get creative with the brushing directions and pitch. The result is a surprisingly shiny and bright dial thanks to contrasting circular and radial brushing. The dial retains our signature inversion despite having no sapphire elements thanks to its concavity and the concentration of internal reflections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result of this extensive use of titanium? A watch that is lighter and looks thinner and more ethereal on the wrist than its dimensions suggest, and is far more durable than it feels for its weight. It is a testament to our engineering that the Ghost proved water resistant up to 260m, far deeper than our initial 100m calculations* and better than some dedicated dive and sport watches. At 38x11mm with an extremely slim bezel, it has great wrist presence but remains wearable for a large range of wrist sizes. It is powered by an all-anthracite Sellita SW300 for MING with custom skeletonized bridges and plates. At night, the Ghost upholds our reputation for brightness with ample deposits of blue Super-LumiNova X1 on the hands and crystal for contrast. With the 37.02 Minimalist, we’re proud to announce that we have finally achieved this in-house and we now have a proprietary white emission luminous material –MING Polar White.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMING Polar White has broad spectrum emission and therefore is one of the very few (if not the only) luminous material to truly glow white instead of being tinted. The 37.02 Minimalist is the first of several watches to feature MING Polar White.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe chose the 37.02 Minimalist as the first model to develop under the new MING as it is a philosophical successor to the 17.01 and 27.01, both of which marked previous milestones for us. It represents the current distillation of what we believe an essential, and reductivist watch should be. It feels just as at home on a leather strap as it does on the moulded rubber strap, under a suit cuff or at the beach. It is self-winding, always ready to go, quick to set, and can be dressed up or down for any occasion. It carries the same identifiable design elements and visual impact of any of the watches in our lineup yet remains discreet enough to fly under the radar should the situation call for it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dial is luminous and stylized in the dynamic way only sapphire can do; it can invert, glow, reflect seemingly floating markers, or suck light into a black hole depending on the angle. It is legible but not uniformly boring; balanced but not symmetric. All dial markings are in fact laser cut channels in the sapphire dial that are then liquid filled with our proprietary MING Polar White. We retained the blue emission Super-LumiNova X1 on the distinctive handset for visual contrast and increased legibility.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlaying off the gloss of the dial is our continually refined and improved 37-series case in stainless steel, sized at 38x11mm. It has a narrow bezel and mixed polished-brushed case finishes to make it visually larger and thinner than the dimensions suggest, yet remains comfortable to wear for a wide range of wrist sizes. An oversized crown and double gaskets make for easy winding and setting, as well as 100m of water resistance. It is completed by our new FKM rubber strap which is moulded with a curve that naturally follows the wrist for maximum comfort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is worth noting that due to a regulation technicality, watches produced by Horologer Ming SA in Switzerland are not eligible for a ‘Swiss Made’ mark. A qualifying requirement is that design and engineering be completed in Switzerland, but Ming Thein (MT) now leads this directly in Kuala Lumpur for greater agility and innovation. This was achieved but at the cost of severe aesthetic and ergonomic compromises we simply could not solve despite dozens of iterations – after all, there is only so much you can do with a 19mm thick case. In the end we decided to take a step back conceptually to a slimmer diver in the more elegant architecture of the 37-series.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt turned out that by tweaks to the curvature of the front and rear crystals, prototypes achieved a crush depth of 900m after 24h saturation – more than three times our initial target. The 37.09 Bluefin is thus conservatively rated at 600m of water resistance. It remains a comfortably-proportioned 38mm in diameter with a 12.8mm thickness, 2.8mm of which is externally domed sapphire crystal. Paired with the alternating polished and brushed finishes, this is a dive watch that wears much thinner on the wrist but has a generous visual presence due to the almost complete absence of a bezel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 37.09 Bluefin has its own unique internal construction for two reasons: pressure resistance, and to support the timer scale required of a diver. Instead of using the traditional rotating bezel, we moved this internally onto a Super-LumiNova X1 filled sapphire dial. A sealed crown at 4 ’o clock rotates the entire sapphire dial via a 60-click, unidirectional mechanism secured by sprung bearings. The crown does not pull out or screw down, has luminous fill to be easily located, and may be operated underwater.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe continue our design tradition of minimizing dial text with new timing scales that are easy to index and read for both main time and elapsed time. They use both color and diminishing boldness to make it easy to see where the scale begins. As the sapphire dial rotates, the Hyceram lume hour indices are on the underside of the top crystal. In addition to the sculptural surfacing and our logo on the top, the buckle side is also pocketed to comfortably receive the longer end in the same fashion as our tuck buckle straps. However, there are some commercial considerations that are taken into account – for instance, it would be impossible to have a bespoke, extra-flat, hand finished movement in an entry level piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMT also adds, “A significant part of the design process is experimentation: even if it turns out to be impractical or impossible, it’s important to push boundaries and ask ‘what if?’ The cool but impossible notwithstanding, there are designs that are cool but perhaps do not make sense from a commercial standpoint – usually they’re just too niche or quirky – but they carry a lot of personal appeal to me.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo how did he respond to the challenge posed at that dinner? “Knowing that I would inevitably need to make accommodations to the laws of physics and manufacturing, I decided to shoot for the stars and see where we landed.”, says MT. As this meant a potentially unknown number of changes, we had no way to show a meaningful, final design before asking for commitment, and yet for the project to proceed at all, we would need some commitment to cover the basic economics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThus, ten brave souls trusted us and committed to a horological omakase: a watch with a price cap, an estimated delivery date and a movement new to us, but no other details provided.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAct II: Design \u0026amp; Engineering\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEnter the Frederic Piguet 21, a horologically significant movement with a distinguished history: at just 1.75mm it was for the longest time, one of the thinnest movements ever made and one of the longest produced, from its introduction in 1925 (exactly 100 years ago) up until Piguet was integrated into the Swatch Group. It and its derivatives have been used by nearly the entire industry – with Patek, AP, VC, JLC, IWC, Blancpain, Cartier and others putting their own take on it. And it has long been one of the movements MT has wanted to create a watch around.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA small movement only makes sense in a proportionally sized watch – and whilst MT has always advocated wearability and visual size over physical size, something even smaller than our usual 38mm would be a niche market indeed. “I settled on 35mm – at the threshold of modernity, with a clear vintage bias. I wanted it to wear large, which it does thanks to a narrow bezel, and markers and dial elements pushed to the very outer edge. It needed to be thin, to harmonize with the movement. And it would of course have to be built to modern standards – 50m water resistance and good torsional rigidity.”, adds MT.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDeliberation in every detail is something we take pride in, and in MT’s words, “It [Project 21] wouldn’t be a MING if we didn’t push for more: small cases tend to be light, and unless ultralight to the point of cognitive dissonance – also tend to feel a little hollow. So I designed a case that would be as heavy as possible: solid all the way around the movement and no separate bezel for even higher perceived rigidity. I wanted it machined in dense, exotic tantalum, have three contrasting finishes – mirror polish on the rehaut edge, fine circular brush on the concave bezel that flows into the lug tops, and sandblasted around the flanks that flow continuously into the bottom.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe continues, “There is only one hard line in the case body proper: the edge between the upper and side surfaces. Every other contour is curved in at least one direction, sometimes two. And the caseback isn’t even circular but has a rounded trapezoidal protrusion to provide clearance for the crown tube and stem.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe design combined with the tolerances required for this case and the choice of tantalum meant a multiaxis machining nightmare demanding some of the best case making and machining talent today. This seeming impossibility of a case was one of the many reasons we had never seriously considered producing Project 21 sooner.\u003cstrong\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAct III: It takes a village\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you’ve followed our exploits with the Alternative Horological Alliance and preview of the tantalum bracelet, you will likely guess who brought MT’s vision to dense, metallic life: Joshua Shapiro, AHA co-founder, watchmaker and machining savant. Project 21’s case is produced and finished entirely by Josh and his team in Los Angeles and is a masterpiece of machining in tantalum, down to the multiple finishes on the 3.5mm diameter crown.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJosh adds, “Machining in tantalum always has its challenges, and Ming’s design are always eloquent yet difficult. We were extremely pleased with the result despite the difficulties and feel a tantalum case like this has never been made before.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMT didn’t stop with the case though – “A project this special meant we had to keep going. My take on the Frederic Piguet cal. 21 involves completely reworking the vintage movements with new bridges including one in titanium that is colour matched to the dial, skeletonised to show off the gear train, and has jewels set in chatons.” We partnered with TitAl SA and Mathis Horlogerie for these extensive changes. All other bridges carry polished anglage and fine sablage, in a nod to the finishing used on our other movements. An exciting but daunting challenge for everyone involved.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dial side is equally special: despite being an extra-flat, Project 21 has two dials: the first features a multilayered pattern of strakes constrained within a fused borosilicate layer by our partner FEMTOprint. This is suspended over a CVD coated brass plate that’s just 400 microns thick yet manages to carry milling that echoes the strake pattern above. The indices are etched into the external crystal, and the skeletonized hands have polished and angled flanks; due to its thinness and the thematic intent there is no luminous material, making the Project 21 one of the very few watches we have made that does not glow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“I have always sought balance in design and Project 21 is perhaps the most finely tuned expression of that to date. In a normal watch, the dial is fixed to the movement, which is in turn fixed to the caseband, with upper and lower bezels forming the front crystal and caseback respectively. The MING LW.01 has a combined “dial” ring and movement holder shaped like a hat, just 0.5mm thick in places but ribbed for strength. To prevent injury to the dial or disruption of the movement, this assembly is supported from the rear by a cage with 3D struts. It also caps and seals the entire assembly to the bezel, which despite being very narrow, is internally hollowed to save further weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no actual dial per se: the outer ring\/background is the movement holder, and the central movement portion is occluded by a gradient print on the outer crystal – which also contains the index markings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe explored a wide range of ultralight materials including carbon fiber derivatives and hollow-core 3D printing, but ultimately found that AZ31 Magnesium-Aluminium-Zinc-Manganese alloy from Smiths High Performance was both lighter than carbon (1.77g\/cc, vs ~2g\/cc density), more consistent to produce than hollow 3D printing, and more importantly retained the feel of metal. It is further surface treated by plasmaelectrolytic oxidation by Keronite for corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, with a further composite protective layer. Material choices do not stop there: even the crystal is not sapphire, but instead Corning Gorilla Glass 6 via Knight Optical with an additional hardening treatment. At 2.40g\/cc, it is significantly lighter than the 3.98g\/cc of traditional sapphire whilst retaining 670 Vickers hardness and high impact resistance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery single component on the watch – down to the screws (in PEEK composite), hollowing of the bezel, and anglage of case buttressing – was optimised to hit the absolute balance of durability and weight. The crown is in anodised aluminium for durability of threading reasons. Finite element simulation was used to check overall torsional rigidity of the watch case. Fixed integral bars machined from the same billet as the case both contribute to rigidity and are lighter than steel springbars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe final result is a complete head weight of just 8.8 grams with manual winding, 10.8 grams with automatic winding, and an additional 0.6 grams for the matching AZ31 buckle, and 1.2 grams for the ‘record’ spec Alcantara strap. A fact that was reinforced when Ming Thein (MT) created a dial that looks like an object the entire plot of a science fiction film might revolve around, both figuratively and literally.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA dial this unique requires an appropriately special watch and naturally we looked to our 20.01 series of chronographs which has served as the launch platform for our most significant dial innovations to date.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday’s release, the MING 20.01 Series 5, continues this tradition with what is probably the industry’s first dial that is laser milled from a single block of metal to create complex radial strakes that have interlocking surface contours in both vertical and horizontal planes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis micromachined dial is then vapor coated an intense blue and subjected to another round of lasering to selectively remove coating from the top of the strakes, leaving bare titanium with a stonewashed texture. And if machining such fine contours and applying multiple colours and finishes was not difficult enough, MT decided to do all of this from a single block of titanium.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCompleting the 20.01 Series 5 is the AgenGraphe by Agenhor - one of the most significant and sophisticated chronograph movements available today. It contains many advanced and unique features such as a central chronograph core; Agenhor’s proprietary backlash-free gears; proprietary horizontal clutch mechanism; instantaneous jumping minutes; snail reset cams; and proprietary regulation mechanism. It is presented here in a unique configuration to MING: manual wind, with 5N rose gold coated bridges, and polished anglage. A hard winding stop also gives tangible feedback once the mainspring is fully charged.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll of this is housed in a hybrid 20-series case - the bezel, ‘flying blade’ lugs, caseback, and crown are in stainless steel; pushers are titanium and coloured to match the dial, and the caseband is in DLC titanium for contrast. Since 2017, Ming Thein (MT) has wanted to make an accessibly priced chronograph but was limited by movement choice and case architecture. SW562.M1. It is a destro with hand winding, central seconds, and a 30-minutes counter at 6 o’clock. The destro configuration means MT could specify a large, tactile crown and pusher without concern for interference with the wearer’s wrist. The Odyssey has a smoked sapphire dial, which teases and hints at the movement underneath, and the 24-hour markings are not only luminous but also colour coded for the day-night indication.
